Kids, Families and Groups
The kendo lesson is built for groups — you spar against each other. Minimum ages, what works for children, and how to book a party.
Almost half the bookings in this category are for three or more people, and the kendo lesson in particular is designed around it: you spar against each other. A family of four in armour under instruction is the version of this that people tell stories about.
Children
- Check the operator’s minimum age — it varies, and the forging workshop has stricter limits than kendo because of heat and tools.
- The armour is heavy and hot. Older children handle it well; younger ones may tire before the sparring, which is the part they came for.
- Kendo suits children who want to hit things — which is most of them. The sword class rewards patience and precision and suits teenagers more than small children.
- The craft workshop at $107 is the gentlest hands-on option and the one to pick for younger families who want to make something.
- The show is fine for all ages and involves no exertion.
Groups
- Book the whole party in one reservation. Sessions are small; a group split across two slots is two separate experiences.
- Operators price per person, and the good slots go in cherry-blossom season and autumn. Book early.
- Six to nine people is a common booking size here and works well — enough to rotate sparring partners, small enough for instruction.
- Mixed ability is fine. The lesson assumes nothing.
Which for a Family
| Group | Book |
|---|---|
| Family with children 8+ | Kendo — they spar each other |
| Family with younger children | Craft workshop, or the show |
| Couple | Sword class — works as a pair |
| Friends, 4–8 | Kendo, one booking |
| Multi-generational | The show, then the lesson for whoever wants it |
Practical
Light clothes under the armour, socks for the dojo floor, water, and nothing scheduled tightly afterwards. You will be tired in the best way.
